PARALES-QUENZA, CARLOS JOSÉ. The fundamental Error of Psychology: Some Reflections on the Contributions of Gustav Ichheiser. Rev. colomb. psicol. [online]. 2010, vol.19, n.2, pp.161-175. ISSN 0121-5469.
The fundamental attribution error (FAE), later known as lay dispositionism or correspondence bias refers to the tendency for observers to overestimate the role of personal factors and underestimate situational factors in the explanation of behavior. The article vindicates the contributions of psychologist Gustav Iccheiser and illustrates how the bias lays on ideological systems, particularly on individualism as the most important collective representation in the Western world. It is generally acknowledged that the FAE is a process by which individuals construct the meaning of actions as part of common sense thinking; however, the article criticizes the predisposition on the part of psychology and psychologists to reproduce the FAE in their formulations.
