Objectives Identify key aspects in the historical development of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies. To establish in a comprehensive manner the role of immunology as a basis in medical knowledge. Recognize the characters that contribute to the understanding of vasculitis associated with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies. Materials and methods: review of literature from 1982 to 2008 through Pubmed, Embase, Ovid, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, Blackwell Synergy, MD Consult, ProQuest, HighWire, library and archive of the National University of Colombia. Results: 3645 items in English and Spanish were found in relation to the antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies; which we select with an emphasis on medical historical review, relevant clinical trials, controlled and randomized studies, and review in general. Of all the items found, we select those who have a greater interest from a historical point of view and clinical application. Finally for analysis we used 53 bibliographic sources. Conclusions: although the discovery of the antineutrophils anticytoplasmic antibodies was an accidental finding, had a rapid spread, being considered as evidence in diagnosis of vasculitis since their first years of its discovery. There are a great evidence about the contribution of Nephrology and Immunology in several publications. On the other hand, there are many diseases and medicines that are associated with these auto-antibodies, however, in a little of them has value in terms of diagnostic orientation, or severity profile in the treatment.
