MINA H., JOSE; VALADEZ G., ALEX  e  TOLEDANO, TANIT. PHYSICO-CHEMICAL STUDIED OF THERMOPLASTIC STARCH (TPS) AND POLYCAPROLACTONE (PCL). Rev.Bio.Agro [online]. 2013, vol.11, n.spe, pp.31-40. ISSN 1692-3561.

The physicochemical properties of a thermoplastic cassava starch (TPS), plasticized with glycerol, and the effect of polycaprolactone incorporation in three TPS-PCL binary blends at 60-40, 50-50 and 40-60 was studied. The study began with the preparation by extrusion of TPS and subsequent hot blend with the polycaprolactone. Analysis of the results focused primarily on the identification and monitoring of structural change, or retrogradation, which occurred in the thermoplastic starch at different conditioning times (at 54% R.H. and 25ºC). With the starch plasticization process an amorphous mass was predominantly generated, it was evidenced by the results obtained with SEM, XRD and FTIR. With PCL it were obtained immiscible blends, with TPS being the dispersed phase and the trend in the variation of properties, with the conditioning time was similar to that observed in the TPS alone. These findings suggest that physicochemical interactions between TPS and polycaprolactone were not strong enough to affect the structural behavior of TPS, which occurred independent of the content of PCL.
