GRONDIN, Jean. Hermeneutics as rigorous science according to Emilio Betti (1890-1968). Co-herencia [online]. 2011, vol.8, n.15, pp.15-44. ISSN 1794-5887.
Preheideggerian hermeneutics has often seen as an attempt to develop a methodology of the human sciences. If this project goes back to the later XIXth century, this hermeneutic methodology of the human sciences was carried through for the first time after Heidegger, and against his ontological conception of interpretation, in the work of the Italian jurist Emilio Betti (1890-1968). This paper will present, on the occasion of his centenary, the main tenets as well as the limits of his hermeneutic theory. The symmetry of Betti's and Gadamer's hermeneutics will be stressed: Whereas the jurist Betti finds his paradigm of understanding in the contemplative activity of the philologist, Gadamer, whose formation was mainly philological, takes his inspiration from the juridical model in order to put forward his universal hermeneutics of application.
