Resumo

Objective.

To carry out a critical analysis of the diversity of concepts, definitions, and approaches related to family intervention from the perspective of Social Work, which contributes to reflections in training spaces. This article delves into the “professional relationship category.

Methodology.

A systematic review of publications developed between 1962 and 2023 was conducted through inter- and intra-textual analysis.

Results.

The review showed different ways of naming social work intervention with families: action, process, approach, professional practice and accompaniment. Some authors consider all these as equivalent, others consider them as part of the descriptions of the intervention.

Conclusions.

An epistemological turn is necessary to enable the democratization of possible hierarchies between social workers and consultants, reflection on power in the professional relationships, and to position solidarity as a transformative force in these interactions.
