TRIVINO QUINTERO, Lisbeth Patricia et al. A study of lifestyle and its relationship with risk factors for metabolic syndrome in middle-aged adults. Acta Med Colomb [online]. 2009, vol.34, n.4, pp.158-163. ISSN 0120-2448.
Aim: to study the relationship between lifestyle and cardiovascular risk factors in middle-aged adults. Design: this descriptive study included 147 employees. The FANTASTIC questionnaire was applied in order to know and identify lifestyle. Cardiovascular risk factors were defined according to the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults. Results: a good lifestyle was found in the population under study, with 56.5 % and 54.9 %, followed by excellent, with 35,5 % and 23,9 % in men and women, respectively, p <0,05. Negative correlation was found at a higher qualification in the field of nutrition and lower BMI (r = -0,398, p = 0,01) and highest score in the domain of snuff (lower) with lower TAS (r = -0,24, p = 0.05) in women. In addition, weak and significant negative correlation in men in the domain of physical activity and lower triglyceride levels (r = -0,292, p = 0,05). Conclusions: the version of the FANTASTIC questionnaire used presents qualifications similar to those reported in international studies by gender; however the power of its content to identify the degree of cardiovascular risk of the population is weak.
