Objective: determining the prevalence of cigarette smoking during pregnancy and its associated factors. Materials and methods: cross sectional study in pregnant women to whom were carried out a survey at Maternal Fetal Medicine Service at the Hospital Universitario San Vicente de Paúl in Medellín during september 2009 - february 2010. A strict sequential sample was performed. The prevalence of tobacco consumption, the percentage of cessation during gestation, age, number of children were evaluated. Results: 2171 surveys were performed. The prevalence of cigarette smoking was 7.3%, (IC 95% 6.3 - 8.5), and 56%, (90 people) gave up smoking when they found out that they were pregnant. 70 patients continued to smoke, with an average of 7.2 cigarettes a day. Conclusion: the cigarette consumption during gestation is a problem that affects our pregnant women. New research must be done in a population base for a greater population of this kind of people in order to evaluate much more accurately the magnitude of the problem.
