PENALOZA-WANDURRAGA, Jorge Eduardo; PRADA-MOTTA, Sandra e OTERO-PINTO, Juan Carlos. Prevalence of abnormal findings in foetal echocardiograms at the Santander University Hospital, Bucaramanga, Colombia, 2007-2013. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2015, vol.66, n.2, pp.110-115. Objectives: To describe the prevalence of abnormal findings in foetal echocardiograms, and the most frequent abnormalities found with this imaging study. Materials and methods: Cross-sectional study in patients with an indication for foetal echocardiography because of the presence of risk factors or suspected abnormal findings on ultrasound. The patients were seen at the maternal-foetal unit of the Santander University Hospital in Bucaramanga, Colombia, a level III complexity institution serving the population under the government-subsidized health system, during the period between 2007-2013. Sampling was consecutive. Echocardiography was performed by one of the investigators using a MEDISON V10 ultrasound machine with 2D echocardiography, colour Doppler and spectral Doppler. Gestational age (GA), ejection fraction (EF) and abnormalities are described. Abnormalities were divided into 5 subgroups: right AV node abnormality; left AV node abnormality; conotruncal abnormalities; septal abnormalities; and conduction disorders. Results are presented using descriptive statistics. Results: During the period described, 99 foetal echocardiograms were performed. Of those, 40 were described as normal (40.4%) and 56 were categorized as abnormal (59.6%). Abnormal findings included 25.3% septal abnormalities (33); 24.6% conotruncal abnormalities (32); 20.7% right AV node abnormalities (27); 9.2% left AV node abnormalities (12); and 5.3% conduction disorders (7). Conclusions: In our institution, the prevalence of abnormal findings in foetal echocardiograms in pregnant women with an indication for echocardiography was 59.6%.
