ZULUAGA, DIANA PATRICIA. (DESIRE BEYOND SYMPATHY). Ideas y Valores [online]. 2006, vol.55, n.132, pp.31-52. ISSN 0120-0062.

Abstract: The central hypothesis set forth in this essay is that the desire to be appreciated is the fundamental feature of the passionate being described by Hume in the context of his analysis of sympathy in Book II of the Treatise. That desire is linked to the affections of pride and appreciation, as well as to the yearning for those goods (wealth, power, beauty, and virtue), which Hume considers the causes of such affections. Said hypothesis clarifies the potential relationships between the affections of appreciation and pride, as well as of sympathy and comparison, and it makes possible a peculiar reading of the natural origin of convention.

Palavras-chave : Hume; sympathy; desire; affection; convention.
