Objective:

This article studies the representation of the political subject in the ideology of the Partido Comunista de Colombia (PCC) before and after the anti-fascist turn of the Frente Popular (1935), through the analysis of two identity concepts: class and nation.

Methodology:

The research is based on unpublished primary sources from national and regional archives, press and published communist documents, analyzed from conceptual history and the morphological analysis of ideologies.

Originality:

Far from describing the PCC as inadequate to the national reality and its support to the government of Alfonso López as a self-serving attitude, the study, based on a novel documentary corpus, is interested in the ideological scaffolding of the PCC and understands the change in the representation of the political subject as an alteration of the internal conceptual order.

Conclusions:

The displacement of the concept of nation from a marginal to a central position within the communist ideology with the policy of the Frente Popular, which turns it into the legitimate place of enunciation of the political subject at the expense of that of the notion of class, is explained by its reformulation of the principle of majorities in the concept of democracy, by the reaffirmation of anti-imperialism and the world of work as attributes of the pueblo, as well as in the recognition of the national history in accordance with the liberal ideology.
