RESTREPO BETANCUR, Luis Fernando e MEJIA GIRALDO, Luis Miguel. Post-harvest loss in major crops in South America o ver the decade 2010-2019. Acta Agron. [online]. 2023, vol.72, n.1, pp.55-62. Epub 26-Abr-2024. ISSN 0120-2812. https://doi.org/10.15446/acag.v72n1.109477.
The issue related to post-harvest crop loss, i.e., the amount lost after harvesting and before retail sales, is of interest to various nations due to its impact on food availability for the population. The objective of this research was to assess the loss in major crops in the different countries of South America over the decade 2010- 2019. The research process is classified as multidimensional, comparative, and descriptive. MANOVA multivariate techniques and principal component analysis were applied. The multivariate analysis of variance detected highly significant differences (p<0.0001) among the different nations in relation to crop loss. The orthogonal canonical contrast established the divergence of Brazil with respect to the other States when the variables under study were evaluated jointly. It was concluded that fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts are the most affected crops. This has implications for the variety, availability, and cost of food supply in these countries.
