GARCIA ALMEIDA, Laura. Pudebat me latine scribere : The Juvenile Correspondance in Latin of the Granvelle Family. Forma. func. [online]. 2022, vol.35, n.2, e1274. Epub 26-Maio-2022. ISSN 0120-338X. https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v35n2.91274.
The ability to write well in Latin was a fundamental requirement for anyone who wanted to occupy a relevant position in the diplomatic hierarchy of the 16th century. The Granvelle family, which produced two of the most eminent ministers in the reigns of Charles I and Philip II, recognized the importance of learning Latin. The education of its youngest members was a relevant aspect in the creation of its legacy and was closely monitored by the patriarch. The family’s epistolary exchanges thus offer a double function for the historian: the writing of Latin letters presents itself as an additional teaching instrument in an informal context, outside the educational system, and their personal correspondence becomes a rich source of information, for the details of student life in the 16th century abound.
