SAGUA, Benjamín  e  PASCUAL, Mariana. Representation of Chronic Pain: Types and Intensities in Autobiographical Stories of Chilean Women. Forma. func. [online]. 2024, vol.37, n.1, e7073.  Epub 07-Nov-2023. ISSN 0120-338X.  https://doi.org/10.15446/fyf.v37n1.107073.

Medical humanities are at their heyday. They represent great advances and foster improvements for health systems. However, few articles relating discourse and health and, in particular, chronic pain have been produced. This article explores the linguistic resources associated to the discourse construction of chronic pain. To this purpose, a corpus made up of 30 interviews conducted with women who suffer chronic pain was used. The analysis followed a mixed methodological design that identified lexico-grammatical resources and established semantic relations larger than those identified in the previous step. The results were interpreted following the principles proposed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), discourse studies and contributions from the health sciences. We observed that the linguistic resources identified serve seven semantic dimensions, three of which show a higher frequency. In particular, the dimension «intensity» presented greater diversity of resources used to express pain.

Palavras-chave : discourse; health; chronic pain; pain communication; pain instantiation.
