The acquisition of vocabulary is a key process for cognitive, emotional and volitional development. The goal of this study is to describe and compare the passive vocabulary of children diagnosed with expressive and mixed SLI from two language schools in the commune of Curicó (Chile), according to sex and schools. A descriptive-comparative study was carried out with a non-probabilistic (intentional) sample of 52 students (19 girls and 33 boys). The Vocabulary in Pictures Test (TEVI - R) was administered to the sample as the main data-collection instrument. The test is made up of 116 sheets representing nouns, verbs and adjectives, to which different verbal stimuli are assigned (lexicon). The study revealed that there were no statistically significant differences between groups in any of the variables used as a point of comparison. However, findings confirmed results from previous studies, since the average passive vocabulary of students with expressive SLI is larger than that of students with mixed SLI. The results point out to the need of further research considering other variables to generate a more global understanding of the problem.
