CASTILLO VEGAS, Jesús Luis. Fortune, Virtù and Glory. Considerations on Machiavelli´s Republican Moral. Prax. filos. [online]. 2008, n.26, pp.93-110. ISSN 0120-4688.
In this paper some key concepts, such as fortune, virtù, and glory, are considered in order to seek clarification regarding the problem of the relation between morality and politics in Machiavelli. The Machiavellian virtù certainly includes a good deal of energy and talent, but does not completely lack moral components. From the concept of fortune we can derive a number of criteria for political action, which form a part of the Machiavellian virtù, which, though distant from the Christian morals of his time, places him within a republican conception of morality. Starting from an inquiry into the concept of glory, we discover how glory is a reward for virtù, but it is not awarded to every politician who is successful in his ventures, but only to those who are able to save their country by benign means.
