Objective: The objective of this study was to understand the experiences and feelings of parents during growth and development of children with visual impairments. Materials and Methods: Qualitative study. The methodology used was the interpretative phenomenology. The sample consisted of seven participants, six women and one man, primary caregivers of children diagnosed with blindness enrolled at the Institute for Blind and Deaf Children of Valle del Cauca. Each one of them were interviewed in depth three times. Results: This phenomenological study showed that participants required great effort and dedication during growth and development of their blind children given that, they experiencedfeelings like anger, sadness, fear, uncertainty and shame, to the children's visual disability. Conclusión: Visual impairment is a burden for children and their families, is a complex issue that must be addressed from interdisciplinary teams. For nurses is a challenge, because care must focus on helping the blind child to use the most of their functional residual capacity. The main objective is to get the child and the family to live an adaptation process to the visually impaired as smooth as possible.
