HERNANDEZ ESCOLAR, Jacqueline; CASTILLO AVILA, Irma Yolanda  e  ALVIS ESTRADA, Luis Reynaldo. Knowledge on childhood tuberculosis, in community mothers of Cartagena - Colombia. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2017, vol.33, n.1, pp.16-26. ISSN 0120-5552.

Objective:

To evaluate knowledge about Children's Tuberculosis (TB) who have community mothers of Cartagena.

Method:

Descriptive study conducted with 49 community mothers which were surveyed to assess sociodemographic variables and a questionnaire with 50 questions to measure knowledge of TB in children is applied. Characteristics of the disease, risk factors, prevention practices, clinical manifestations and identification of cases and route of care for suspected cases: 5 major aspects, (10 questions each) are evaluated. The data were stored and analyzed in a database SPSSS version 21 program. Frequency measures were calculated for categorical variables, and measures of central tendency and standard deviations for quantitative variables.

Result:

Out of the total participants, 91.6% (40) are unaware that an individual with latent tuberculosis can spread the disease, 38.8% (19) are unaware of the risk a for a child under one year to catch it, 22.4 % (11) did not identify close contact with a sick person as a risk factor for children. Only 2% (1) recognized the presence of cough for more than 21 days as a suggestive sign of tuberculosis disease in children.

Conclusion:

The community mothers of this study have little knowledge about childhood TB. It is considered necessary to implement educational interventions to empower these stakeholders on this issue.
