The central category: "Learning to live with pain: from incomprehension to adaptation". Also, a common process was identified: 1) Discovery of pain, 2) Experiencing a life of pain, 3) Adapting to a life of change, and 4) Reflection on experience. The meanings and stages of the process comprise the coping strategies used by older adults to cope with their painful situations.
