Introduction:

Physical activity and a healthy lifestyle can be a protective factor for non communicable diseases; both medical professionals and medical students play a fundamental role adopting an active and healthy lifestyle and being capable to teach this behavior to their patients. The objective of the study was to identify the physical activity level and lifestyle in medical residence students from a public university.

Methods:

a descriptive study was carried out in 39 medical students, who completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) questionnaire and a FANTASTIC test to measure lifestyle.

Results:

53.8 % of the residents were overweight, 51.3 % had a very high fat percentage, 48 % of the participants had a low physical activity level and 46 % had an adequate lifestyle.

Conclusions:

Medical residency students have acceptable lifestyle levels with low levels of physical activity, presence of overweight and high percentages of fat, aspects that suggest to take measures and timely decisions to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases development.
