NIETO-PICO, Aura Marcela; RUEDA-VARGAS, Andry e MORA-BAUTISTA, Victor Manuel. Tics disorders in children: a case with diagnostic delay. CES Med. [online]. 2019, vol.33, n.2, pp.126-133. ISSN 0120-8705. https://doi.org/10.21615/cesmedicina.33.2.6.
A tic is a movement (motor tics) or sound (vocal or phonic tics) that is brief, sudden and not rhythmic. The DSM 5 defines three tics disorders: transient tics disorder, persistent (chronic) vocal or motor tics disorder, and Tourette’s syndrome. Their diagnosis is mainly made through clinical history and observation. It is crucial to make an adequate differential diagnosis with other hyperkinetic disorders as dystonias, choreas or athetosis. We present the case of a 9-year-old boy diagnosed after 2 months of symptoms and inadequate treatments, who improved after establishing a correct diagnosis and offering targeted pharmacological therapy.
