Background: in the study of HIV / AIDS has been exclude its symbolic, cultural and historical determination. Objective: to describe the application of medical sociology and anthropology in the study of HIV / AIDS. Methods: review based on articles published in PubMed, OVID, LILACS and SciELO, using the search "HIV/AIDS & (Sociology OR Anthropology OR Socio-anthropology)". Results: three sections are showed, first about HIV/AIDS as a public health problem whose study has been predominant from classical epidemiology, the second present the limitations of the hegemonic model and the third show the applications of sociology and anthropology at the reading of HIV/ AIDS. Conclusion: this text presents some theoretical, conceptual and operational resources of the medical sociology and anthropology may be constitutive of policies, plans and programs of health and to permit a totalized and contextualized interpretation of the disease.
