QUESADA Q, Marvin E. Border Disputes and the Geo-Strategic Value of the San Juan River: Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Cuad. Geogr. Rev. Colomb. Geogr. [online]. 2014, vol.23, n.2, pp.45-67. ISSN 0121-215X. https://doi.org/10.15446/rcdg.v23n2.43387.
On various occasions, Nicaragua and Costa Rica have faced border disputes, mainly due to the fact that the San Juan River is the dividing line between the two countries. This has triggered a series of controversies over the course of the river and some neighboring zones. In 2010, the conflict was reactivated because Nicaragua built a canal on an island belonging to Costa Rica. Each one of the countries values the San Juan River from different geo-strategic perspectives. For Nicaraguans, it symbolizes the hope of development, while for Costa Ricans it is a point of interest for the preservation of the environmentally vulnerable wetlands.
