Objective: To characterize an aged does hemodialysis in a Nephrology Unit in order to identify events related to hemodialysis and perceptions of nuisance with renal disease effects. Methodology: Transversal, descriptive and analytical study with quantitative approach; 35 aged with hemodialysis in a Nephrology Unit of northwestern of Rio Grande do Sul/Brasil participated, who satisfied the inclusion criteria. The data were collected by means of socio-demographics data form and of events, and of Kidney Disease and Quality of Live-Short Form (KDQOL-SFTM). The data analysis was developed by descriptive statistic and Spearman's Correlation Test. Ethical principles were respected and the project was approved by Ethics Committee. Results: Men were 65,7% and they were until 70 years old; 60% were married, all of them had sons, and 74,3% did not finished primary school. The complications related by aged were weakness and cramps, but aged over 80 years old had higher percentages for these events. The renal disease interferes in food limitation, ability to work at home and the personal appearance of the aged (p < 0.,05). Conclusion: The identification of events which can occur and the interferences of renal disease in aged life allows the care team -especially nursing- to direct actions with aim to clarify doubts, improve self-image and self-esteem, to help in coping of renal disease and the treatment with hemodialysis, in order to provide well-being and improve the quality of life of aged in hemodialysis.
