The Total Family risk is described as the probability for adverse individual or family consequences to appear (disease, disorganization or dysfunction) because of the presence of some characteristics detected at the moment of performing the family assessment. Objective: to characterize the Total Family Risk in families of breastfeeding women in a first level institution in Villamaría (Caldas) during 2011. Materials and Methods: quantitative, exploratory, descriptive and transversal study. The sample (n=76) was randomly selected from the files stored in external consultation processes. An admissible 2 units of registration error was calculated and the confidence range was 95%. Each family was assessed with the 5-33 Total Family Risk instrument. Results: large families with a 4.83 persons in average predominated. 62% of the families were ranked as threatened because of the level of Total Family Risk, 35% were ranked in low risk and only 3% were ranked in high risk. Conclusions: The risk of families makes it worthy for nursing and interdisciplinary teams to work for the improvement of areas especially related with psycho affective conditions in threatened families, and in the services and health practices with families in high risk. The assessment of the instrument directs the actions as a basis to construct specific care in health promotion, disease prevention, rehabilitation and follow-up in relation with the studied dimensions and categories.
