CALDERON, Alfonso; TIQUE, Vaneza; ENSUNCHO, Carlos F. e RODRIGUEZ, Virginia. SEROPREVALENCE OF Brucella abortus IN WATER BUFFALOES (Bubalus bubalis) IN CÓRDOBA. rev.udcaactual.divulg.cient. [online]. 2010, vol.13, n.2, pp.125-132. ISSN 0123-4226.
The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of Brucella abortus in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) from three farms in the town of Lorica in the department of Cordoba. We performed a descriptive cross-sectional study that included 133 buffaloes (123 females and 10 males) of the Murrah breed, age between 12 and 96 months. Techniques used for the serological diagnosis were rapid agglutination in plate using antigen stained with Rose Bengal and competitive ELISA technique to confirm the positive results by the rapid slide agglutination test. The seroprevalence to B. abortus by the Rose Bengal test was 12% (16/133), these positive reactors were confirmed by competitive ELISA and a prevalence of 3% (4/16) was established. This is the first survey in the area of Lorica in the department of Córdoba which has established a seroprevalence to B. abortus from 3% in water buffalo population of livestock in this region of the country. These results indicate that the prevalence of the infection is low and that measures to control brucellosis as well as to maintain an active surveillance of cases in this species are necessary.
