ROSAS MARTINEZ, Alfredo. The Unheard of Lover: Mourning, Melancholy and Intransitive Love in the Figure of Pedro Páramo. Lit. teor. hist. crit. [online]. 2016, vol.18, n.2, pp.157-182. ISSN 2256-5450. https://doi.org/10.15446/lthc.v18n2.58753.
The purpose of this article is to analyze the characteristics of mourning, melancholy and love in the character of Pedro Páramo. The death of his wife, Susana San Juan, places him in a state of mourning. Subsequently, melancholy leads to sadness and deep vital decline. However, there is an aspect that vindicates him: love. In this sense, the influence of Rainer Maria Rilke regarding intransitive (unrequited) love is fundamental. Melancholy turns Pedro Páramo into a poet. Black bile from melancholy serves as dark ink to tell of his love without response, and he becomes an unheard of lover.
