Analyzing O desertor may promote the advancement of the understanding of the place and function of formation in the Brazilian social structure, and of its cultural expression. Silva Alvarenga premises the poem on the Jesuitical educational project, perceived as problematic, and presents Pombal's reforms as a good emergency response. To that end, transgressing the neoclassic convention, the poet breaks off from the traditional poetic forms, just as in Coimbra the Marquis of Pombal suppressed the outdated statutes of the University, founded on Scholasticism. Thus, if the students of the University rejected Pombal's innovations because they deprived them of freedom, likewise, the poem by Silva Alvarenga, by freeing itself from the "closed" form of the traditional verses, rhymes and stanzas, will be repelled by all those not prepared for the innovations that the poet introduced in the form of the poem.
