CORTES, JORGE ALBERTO; MORENO CARRILLO, ATILIO; ALVAREZ, CARLOS ARTURO e TAMARA, JOSÉ ROBERTO. Experience with lopinavir/ritonavir for patients with HIV infection at an university hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. Infect. [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.4, pp.220-225. ISSN 0123-9392.
Objective. To evaluate the efficacy of rescue treatment with lopinavir/ritonavir in a cohort of patients infected with HIV in a developing country. Methods. Retrospective evaluation of patients who received combined antiretroviral treatment (cART) using lopinavir/ritonavir at an universitary hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. The virological and immunological follow up was evaluated, together with the tolerance and adherence. Results. 25 patients with previous cART and a patient naïve had a mean follow up of 13 months. The mean of previously used cART schemes was 2.28. The CD4 count increased over time and none of the individuals with a follow up of 36 months had CD4 counts below 50. The frequency of patients with undetectable viral load (<400 copies) increased over time and was 67% for patients with 36 months of follow up. None of the patients discontinued the treatment. Conclusion. The use of lopinavir/ritonavir in patients heavily experienced in a developing country was effective. Immunological and virological control was obtained in a significant number of patients and the treatment was well tolerated.
