FERNANDEZ-MATOS, Dhayana; BUITRAGO, Beatriz; ALMANZA-IGLESIA, Maury e VILLANUEVA-HINCAPIE, Carlos. Institutional tolerance of violence against women. Justicia [online]. 2022, vol.27, n.42, pp.1-22. Epub 03-Fev-2023. ISSN 0124-7441. https://doi.org/10.17081/just.27.42.6068.
Objective:
To analyze the imaginaries and beliefs that influence gender-based violence against women among public officials in the department of La Guajira and institutional tolerance of this phenomenon.
Method:
A quantitative methodology was used through a self-administered survey. The type of sampling was by convenience and 94 people participated: 63 women and 31 men. The results obtained were compared with the averages of the national measurements of institutional tolerance carried out in 2010, 2015 and 2021.
Results:
87% disagreed with seeing motherhood as the only source of fulfillment for women. 46% considered that “when men are angry it is better not to provoke them”. One in four respondents (25%) agreed that battered women stay in a violent relationship because they like being abused. Twenty-nine percent agreed that the way a woman dresses, if she dresses provocatively, can be a reason to be disrespected.
Conclusions:
The State, through the public institutions of the department of La Guajira with direct and indirect competencies in the attention, prevention and eradication of gender-based violence against women, should take measures aimed at eradicating stereotypes and cultural patterns, since their persistence contributes to the presence of this problem in the territory.
