Historic gardens conservation is not acknowledged as an urban planning issue in Brazil yet. That is why reporting experiences means an important contribution for stimulating new developments. This paper reports a workshop on historic garden restoration that took place in the city of Recife, Brazil, in 2012 by focusing the Ministro Salgado Filho Square, which was created by the Burle Marx in 1957, although its use fell into decline since 2000. It is part of the set of gardens he designed in Recife from 1935 to 1958 and considered by the Brazilian federal government as a cultural heritage. The restoration project of the Ministro Salgado Filho Square was elaborated in 2009 but had not been carried out by the time the workshop occurred. The workshop then provided an opportunity for assessing the project in order to enrich its details and variables. The landscape architect Cristina Castel-Branco was in charge of the workshop and presented the restoration theory to support its application in historic garden restoration works, involving lecturers, undergraduate and graduate students, and civil servants from planning institutions. The results brought new perspectives relative to proceedings and criteria for restoring historic gardens intended to be included in the urban planning.
