ZAMBRANO-ARTEAGA, Juan C.; HOYOS-SANCHEZ, Rodrigo A. e CHICAIZA-FINLEY, Diego. Evaluation of the germination of iraca palm seeds (Carludovica palmata) under in vitro and ex vitro conditions. Caldasia [online]. 2022, vol.44, n.2, pp.221-230. Epub 23-Maio-2024. ISSN 0366-5232. https://doi.org/10.15446/caldasia.v44n2.86282.
The fiber of the iraca palm is used as a raw material in the elaboration of multiple crafts including the Panama hat, reason why it is important to study factors that contribute to the germinability of seeds, useful for their propagation. The goal of this study was to evaluate the germination capacity under in vitro and ex vitro conditions of seeds from two stages of maturity of Carludovica palmata infructescences. Germination percentages were evaluated through four disinfection protocols, two maturity statuses of the infructescences in in vitro conditions, three gibberellic acid concentrations (GA3) in ex vitro, and two in in vitro conditions, and finally four germination substrates, peat, soil, peat-soil, and MS medium. The seeds from the stage of maturity E1 presented a lower germination percentage (17.95 %) compared with the seeds from the stage E2 (86.84 %) (P < 0.05), which determines the use of this stage of maturity in subsequent experiments. On the other hand, the seeds germinate efficiently under in vitro conditions in semi-solid medium MS, obtaining a germination percentage of 88.2 %, much higher than that obtained with conventional substrates (P < 0.05), showing that this method is very efficient for the multiplication of iraca palm, so it can be used in the large-scale production of seedlings of this crop.
