SALAMANCA, CARLOS. FROM MASS GRAVES TO PANTHEON: CONTRADICTIONS IN TRIBUTES TO THE REVIVED INDIANS. Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2008, vol.44, n.1, pp.7-39. ISSN 0486-6525.

The Argentinean State recognizes 1911 as the year of the definitive military conquest of the Chaco region. One decade after this glorious date, the Reducción de Indios de Napalpi was the scene of the greatest manifestation of institutionalized violence by the Argentinean Nation against the indigenous people. In light of the democratization processes of the 80s and contemporary indigenous political actions, the massacre is characterized by multiple readings and sometimes contradictory uses. This article examines the contexts in which the Napalpi massacre becomes a scenario of political struggle, at a time when new political practices and discourses challenge the stability of State/Indigenous relationships.
