CARTAY, Rafael. Between Shock and Disgust: The Consumption of Insects in the Amazon Basin. The Case of Rhynchophorus palmarum (Coleoptera Curculionidae). Rev. colomb. antropol. [online]. 2018, vol.54, n.2, pp.143-169. ISSN 0486-6525. https://doi.org/10.22380/2539472x.465.
Based on field experience in the Peruvian Amazon and extensive bibliographic review of edible insects, a little studied topic in the South American academy, this article addresses the importance of insect consumption among indigenous groups in the Amazon basin, in particular the larva of Rhynchophorus palmarum, as an alternative source of protein and fat in their daily diet. It also describes the economic activity of collection, culinary processing, different forms of consumption, and its symbolic significance.
