GONZALEZ-ORTEGA, Yariela. Validity and Reliability of “Caring for Professional Performance”: validade e confiabilidade. Aquichan [online]. 2008, vol.8, n.2, pp.170-182. ISSN 1657-5997.

Purpose: To determine the validity and reliability of the Spanish version of Caring for Professional Performance - “Form A”, an instrument designed by Dr. Sharon Horner to understand, develop and measure the nursing phenomena associated with care in the Panamanian context. Method: This is a methodological study conducted in four phases: the translation process, in which a sample of three experts was used; the facial or apparent validation phase, with a sample of ten teachers from the National University of Colombia School of Nursing and ten teachers from the University of Panama School of Nursing; the preliminary adjustment phase, with a sample of ten hospitalized patients, and the reliability phase, with a sample of 284 hospitalized patients. In the translation process, the wording of items 12 and 21 was corrected and item 20 was restructured. The wording of the items concerning facial validity was modified, without changing the initial meaning, and the original scale was replaced with: always, almost always, sometimes and never. Results: The preliminary adjustment test indicated an understanding on the part of the patients. The reliability test produced a Cronbach alpha reliability coefficient of 0.80 with factors that oscillated between 0.25 and 0.69. The alphas per item were between 0.78 and 0.80. Conclusion: The instrument shows facial or apparent validity and internal consistency, which demonstrates its suitability for use in the Panamanian context.
