REY ASHFIELD, William. Emotion and Intuition: New Keys for Understanding Uruguay's Modern Architecture. Apuntes [online]. 2008, vol.21, n.2, pp.252-265. ISSN 1657-9763.
Analysis, critics and historical research of modern architecture in Uruguay have been dominated by terms such as rationalism, geometric abstraction, purism of forms, functionalism, etc. These concepts are considered to represent the architectural production, thus neglecting the fundamental importance of emotion and intuition in the process of architectural composition. Without doubt, this is the result of the predominant line in European modernist historiography, which avoided or minimized the role of the senses and of intuition when new spaces and materials were being proposed. The direct influence of persons such as Eugenio Steinhof, Dutch and German expressionism and (in a less direct way) the works of F. L. Wright, which were known through publications such as Wendingen -that represented the expressionist movements- urges reflections from an alternative point of view. It is necessary to consider the search for new spaces, new forms and new materials that comes forth with the modernist's intellectual development in Latin America and specifically in Uruguay.
