CAMELO MAYORGA, ALBA STELLA; POSADA TORRES, MARTHA DEL SOCORRO e ARRIETA SANCHEZ, ABELINO ANDRÉS. Identity and community building among an Afro-Colombian population in Suba district, Bogotá. Tabula Rasa [online]. 2019, n.32, pp.271-288. ISSN 1794-2489. https://doi.org/10.25058/20112742.n32.12.
This paper presents some cultural practices that help build identity and a sense ofcommunity among Afro-Colombian people living in the area of Suba (Bogotá, Colombia). The community under study is made up for their most part by Afro-Colombian immigrants, coming from rural areas, mainly the department of Choco. These migrants are immersed in a process of adaptation and integration to urban culture. They keep some identity traits from their places of origin, which are sustained by religious, gastronomic, and musical practices. Contact with indigenous and mestizo populations in the new geographic settings allows for building new intercultural relations, imaginaries and symbols over the foundations of their various ancestral cultures.
