In Brazil, studies on the motivation for voluntary work and its nuances remain scarce. Abroad, there are difficulties for a theoretical consensus. In addition, existing studies often do not consider the different types of volunteer work, the sociodemographic differences, and the importance of cultural variables in each country. Therefore, this study analyzed the motivations for volunteering of 150 Brazilian workers from different organizations and diverse demographic characteristics, aiming to propose a comprehensive model that reflected both the national reality's peculiarities and the recommendations from the international literature. The data were analyzed qualitatively using the IRAMUTEQ software, which presented five possible lexical classes or types of motivation for voluntary work: religious, fraternal, altruistic, transformative, and personal. Thus, it is expected to help increase the understanding of volunteer work in Brazil, contributing to the improvement of policies aimed at attracting and maintaining volunteers, and evaluate the quality of the programs.
