Abstract This essay analyzes representations of poverty and social inequality in fiction narratives (particularly novels) written by a part of the so-called Generation of the 1940s-a writers’ generation interested in producing a realistic and social literature. Therefore, it studies fiction novels by three outstanding writers: Adolfo Herrera García (who wrote Juan Varela), Carlos Luis Fallas (who wrote Mamita Yunai,Gentes y Gentecillas, and Marcos Ramírez), and Fabián Dobles (who wrote Ese que llaman pueblo and El sitio de las abras).
