Family business area has highlighted the importance of emotions management, especially in cases where a member of the family plays roles in the three subsystems: family, ownership and business. However, little has been researched on how emotions affect such organizations. This study explores the reason why emotional intelligence of a family business' members is different in each subsystem and identifies the factors that influenced the emotional intelligence of a Colombian case studied in depth. Data were analyzed with the four components of emotional intelligence and the three subsystems of the family business. The findings indicate that individual's emotional intelligence can be affected by many factors such as: communication, marital status, emotional experience, expressivity, culture, relationships with in-laws, family members' support, ability to relate and conciliate, initiative, planning property and owners training, confidence and the presence of external people in the company, empowerment, education and managers training. These factors also may affect in one or more subsystems the Emotional Intelligence of an individual or the group that interacts with. This research highlights the importance of interpersonal dynamics and emotions in the long-term viability of a family business.
