SANABRIA AGUIRRE, Sonia Esperanza  e  HURTADO AGUIRRE, Enrique. Green entrepreneurship in Colombia: the case of clean development mechanism (CDM). Entramado [online]. 2013, vol.9, n.1, pp.38-65. ISSN 1900-3803.

The Clean Development Mechanism is the only formal economic instrument on the market that makes it possible for industrialized countries that ratified the Kyoto Protocol to access opportunities of migration of emissions in developing countries. Hence, it constitutes an instrument that fosters entrepreneurship, both locally and abroad, thus turning the negative external factor associated with the climate change into a business opportunity. Based on a review of the information contained in 45 documents describing the design of projects registered by Colombia with the United Nations as of February 2013 and of publicly available information of companies involved in these kinds of projects, this article provides an analysis of the contribution of this mechanism to green entrepreneurship in Colombia. The results of this review show that there are still a small number of initiatives for entrepreneurship in Colombia using the Clean Development Mechanism because the number of registered projects is also small. The entrepreneurship rate is higher in economic sectors such as those engaged in the handling and disposal of waste and renewable energies. They also show that most entrepreneuring companies acting on behalf of Colombia are private companies and state-owned industrial and commercial companies. Foreign participants come primarily from countries such as the United Kingdom, Japan, and The Netherlands. It is concluded that there is a need to eliminate some barriers in order to strengthen entrepreneurship by means of this mechanism.
