This article studies the impact of then apllication of building information modeling (BIM) technology on the creation of construction budgets for structures with reinforced concrete in comparison to the traditional calculation method, which is based on drawings in two dimensions (2D). The case study is the reinforced concrete structure of a bus station from the public transportation system in the city of Bucaramanga, Colombia. The methodology for the development of the BIM model and the integration of the construction budget information into the model is presented. A comparison between the project budget obtained with the traditional method and the budget obtained with the use of BIM is conducted. This comparison makes it possible to verify the contribution of BIM implementation to an increase in precision in the construction budget, which arises from the precision achieved in the calculation of project quantities, the ease with which the BIM model can, amongst others, determine project activities and integrate project information in a single database.
