FREY SANCHEZ, ANTONIO VICENTE. Estudio comparativo de los ámbitos funerarios en templos de España e Iberoamérica durante la etapa colonial. Front. hist. [online]. 2013, vol.18, n.2, pp.167-212. ISSN 2027-4688.
The custom of burying the deceased inside churches existed in the Iberian Peninsula since the beginning of christianity. This practice had its roots in the Middle Ages, but its characteristics evolved in such manner, that burials ended up being held in private chapels built or supported by the future occupants of the graves. This paper aims to review that evolution through some significant examples in Spain and Latin America. Afterwards, it focuses on the archaelogical reality of collective burial crypts and on the collapse of the burial system in the second half of the eigteenth century through the case of a recent excavation in Cartagena (Spain).
