PENA-ORTEGA, JAVIER. Military Engineers in the Atrato River: Cartography and Commerce (1760-1790). Front. hist. [online]. 2020, vol.25, n.1, pp.76-101. ISSN 2027-4688.  https://doi.org/10.22380/20274688.858.

The administration of the Nuevo Reino de Granada sought to make the Chocó an efficient area in the production of precious minerals and a center of commercial exchange; the method to achieve this purpose was focused on trade via the Atrato River. This paper analyzes the way in which the military engineers, through cartography, justified the development of commercial navigation of the Atrato River in the second half of the 18th century. For this purpose, the map of the Atrato River's course will be taken in consideration with the relationship made by the military engineer Juan Donoso in its production context.
