GALLARDO-PORRAS, Viviana. Domeyko and His Trip to Araucanía: The Narrative Construction of the Indigenous World at the Dawn of Republican Chile. Historelo.rev.hist.reg.local [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.24, pp.14-38. ISSN 2145-132X. https://doi.org/10.15446/historelo.v12n24.80739.
From the work "Journey to Araucanía in 1845" by Polish naturalist Ignacio Domeyco; this article inquires the value of travel stories as a historical source, considering the debate on the double character, documentary and fictional of this narrative genre. It is intended to identify the present narrative construction in said work, giving account of its descriptive strategies and resources, references and statements. Domeyko's reviewed travel diary mainly reveals his argument, that is, the artistic construction, ways of saying things, elections and orders, the incorporation of historical tales and the comparisons of the known and unknown. It is concluded that, through narrative construction, Domeyko manages to build a representation of the indigenous world, rescuing the heroic Araucanian from sixteenth century literature, complementing with features from the Araucanian culture and customs of the mid nineteenth-century.
