This research analyzed the increase in the importance of soft skills in the Systems Engineering career at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, which were considered relevant in the academic training process and in the recruitment of new professionals in the information and communication technology, ICT industry. Fifty interviews were conducted with industry leaders. Results of the research include a holistic approach to strengthening soft skills in ICT training programs, where recruitment is the benchmark. First, factors that could influence the strengthening of the development of these skills were identified and grouped into operational axes characteristic of academic activity. Simultaneously, as a result of the research process, guidelines were set for a new vision of university training for new ICT professionals, where technical skills are a key component of the training process, while the incorporation and evaluation of soft skills and their impact on the demand for new competences in the labor market is assumed to be necessary. This is done with the aim of permanently adjusting university education to modern and changing demands for a professional profile with the appropriate skills to meet the occupational and professional challenges in the digital economy.
