CASTRO GONZALEZ, Laura. Unfinished longings: Xalapa's modern university campus in 1957. Rev. Ciudades Estados Política [online]. 2021, vol.8, n.1, pp.51-67. Epub 15-Dez-2021. ISSN 2462-9103.
In the last years, new and deeper studies were done about the urban model named university campus in Latin America, especially in the first half of the twentieth century, creating the idea that these projects and constructions are part of a new typology, different from the American or European campuses. Nevertheless, most of these studies are about urban projects constructed in capital cities, ignoring local interpretations of modern university campus in other provinces. This article tries to introduce a 1957 campus project in the Mexican province2, made for the Universidad Veracruzana (UV) in Xalapa. Also, wants to analyze typologically the modern architecture elements used in this project from the local perspective, including the references to the Ciudad Universitaria of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), as well as the incidence of the political, economic and social conditions in the project proposal and future construction of Xalapa's university campus. It was necessary to consult regional historical records, as well as bibliographical and hemerographical sources. In conclusion, this campus project, like in the rest of Latin America, responded to the national modernization program and represented twentieth century liberal values; at the same time, incorporated natural and cultural regional particularities at the urban and architectural modern elements.
