CASTRO, Alejandro; BARRIGA, Adriana Paola e PERDOMO, Omar. Measurement of myocardial oxygen consumption in normal postpartum: example of physiological efficiency. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2005, vol.56, n.4, pp.288-293. ISSN 0034-7434.
Objective: to determine the myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) in patients during early postpartum period, as a parameter of myocardial efficiency and to compare the results with the MVO2 values in healthy adult patients from other studies. Methods: MVO2 was measured on 120 women in early postpartum without any pathology. Training set and test set groups were obtained in a retrospective and prospective manner respectively; subgroups were analyzed according to age, type of delivery and parity. EDOR formula was used for measurement of the MVO2. The measurements were compared with other studies on healthy patients. Results: the average MVO2 on postpartum patients of our study was 6.58 ml/min-1/100 g-1 of tissue, with a maximum value of 7.33 ml/min-1/100 g-1 of tissue. Our study patients had statistically significant lower results of MVO2 when compared with healthy patients from other studies. There were not statistically significant MVO2 differences between the age, parity and type of delivery subgroups. Conclusion: myocardial efficiency is evident during the postpartum period, with a high cardiac output associated with a low MVO2.
