SALINAS, Paulina; REYES, Claudia; ROMANI, Gianni  e  ZIEDE, Marcela. The Female Labor Market: an Empirical Study of the Mining Region of Antofagasta, Chile. Innovar [online]. 2010, vol.20, n.38, pp.125-140. ISSN 0121-5051.

This study, which is the product of research carried out in the labor market in the Antofagasta region, examines the low degree of participation by women in the zone and describes the factors associated with this situation. The analysis of the results was based on conversations with 87 female workers (salaried and/or micro businesses) from diverse labor sectors of the region. Obstacles for gaining access to the market, the reasons for redeployment of this sector and measures that would address this condition are identified. This study corroborates results obtained by previous research and concludes that, despite economic growth in the zone, the factors associated with this phenomenon are related to the mining condition of the region, insufficient employment training, incompatibility between productive and reproductive roles, reduced economic opportunities and gender discrimination, all of which are structural, cultural and institutional variables.

Palavras-chave : mining region; labor market; discrimination and gender gaps.
