Colombia is the leading foreign supplier of cut flowers to the United States, with 65 % share of U.S. imports of this product in 2019. Colombia has exported cut flowers to de United States for more than three decades, and it is also the world´s second largest exporter of the product. These facts highlight the strategic importance to the Colombian economy of maintaining its competitiveness as for the exporter companies and identify international competitors that could threat the economic position of the Colombian industry. The goal of this empirical study was to estimate the relative export advantage and competitiveness of Colombian cut flowers in the U.S. market and that of its main competitors, during the period from 1992 to 2019 through the technique of Constant Market Share. The indices obtained show that Colombia and Ecuador are currently on par of export advantage, with scores of 4.4 % and 4.5 %, respectively, so the competitiveness of exports has been positive for both countries. Colombia has an opportunity to improve its competitiveness aggregating value to exports, strengthening the link between export oriented growers and the distributors of the product in the destination market, as well as adapting to the dynamics of the retailers in the U.S. market.
