MILLER, Hollman. Mantids of Vaupés, Colombia: a preliminary view (Insecta: Mantodea). Bol. Cient. Mus. Hist. Nat. Univ. Caldas [online]. 2023, vol.27, n.2, pp.183-205.  Epub 14-Maio-2024. ISSN 0123-3068.  https://doi.org/10.17151/bccm.2023.27.2.11.

Objective:

A systematic list of the Mantodea recorded in the Vaupés region, a jungle area located in the southeast of Colombia, and belonging to the Amazon region, is presented.

Methodology:

In addition to consulting specific bibliographic sources, the material of the order Mantodea, preserved in dry conditions in the collection of the author of this paper was reviewed, taxonomic keys were made for the identity of some relevant genera with the help of a stereomicroscope, and an illustrated list of the species found.

Results:

Fifty specimens belonging to 18 genera and 22 species were found.

Scope:

A new record for the Amazonian fauna is reported within the material as follows: Metacanthops amazonica (Beier, 1930), Acanthops erosula Stal, 1877; Pseudomiopteryx guyanensis Chopard, 1912; Oxyopsis media (Stal, 1877); Pseudovates brasiliensis Piza, 1982; and Parastagmatoptera sottilei Lombardo & Ippolito, 2014. The Amazonian range of distribution of Stenophylla lobivertex Lombardo 2000, previously reported in Colombia for the Putumayo region (Salazar, 2007) is expanded.

Conclusion:

These new records allow concluding that the mantid fauna of the region is diversified, especially due to its proximity to Brazil.
